Celeste Haldane

Celeste Haldane, K.C., ICD.D, is a practising lawyer, a strategic advisor, and recently completed the ICD-Rotman, Directors Education Program. Celeste is a proud member of Musqueam (Coast Salish) and Metlakatla (Tsimshian) from the Sparrow and Haldane families and has European ancestry where several of her maternal family members reside in Sointula. She draws upon 20 years of experience practicing First Nations law, Constitutional Law, Human Resource Law, with a sharp focus on Corporate Governance as her specialties. For nine years she served as the Chief Commissioner of the BC Treaty Commission and prior she served six years as the First Nations Summit elected Commissioner. She practiced law for a large first nations organization on Vancouver Island and practiced criminal defense and civil litigation in Vancouver. She is an active member of both the Indigenous Bar Association and the Canadian Bar Association. She holds a Master of Laws in Constitutional Law from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. She earned a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts (Anthropology) from the University of British Columbia. She was honoured with being appointed Queen’s Counsel, now King’s Counsel, in 2018. Celeste is currently the Vice Chair at the YWCA BC. She has served on several corporate and not-for-profit boards. Most recently she was a member of the independent appointing committee to the Taxonomy and Transition Planning Council that will oversee the creation and implementation of the new made-in-Canada sustainable finance taxonomy.
