In 2007, BC introduced Young and New Worker legislation. The regulations outline what a young worker is and what duties the employer has to young workers, especially regarding orientations, training and supervision. According to the legislation, a young worker is anyone who is under 25 years old.
In BC, youth can get a job at the age of 15 without their parents’ permission. The minimum employment age is 12 with parent permission. There are some exceptions to this rule, e.g. in the entertainment industry.
Young workers are at the front of the line when it comes to workplace vulnerability. Young and new workers often end up doing the most dangerous, difficult jobs. One-third of workplace injuries reported are from young workers. The lack of empowerment that young workers feel in their jobs is often one of the reasons why these workers are at such a high risk of injury on the job.
