Legal Rights for Youth

LegalRights4U.ca uses animated videos and handouts to teach young people about their rights and responsibilities in Canada. Scenarios include Street Freedoms, Don’t Look in My Locker and The Party. A teacher’s guide is also provided.

CourtInformation.ca is the home of the Court Information Program for Immigrants. The program eliminates language and cultural barriers and enhances access to the courts and to justice for immigrants and refugees.

Downtown Community Court Videos

Vancouver's Downtown Community Court is a pilot project that aims to reduce crime and improve public safety by addressing underlying problems that lead to offenders committing crimes. Videos produced by the Society introduce you to the court, explain how it works, and detail how the court is working with the community.

Community Crime Prevention Guide

The Community Crime Prevention Guide provides information and tools for BC communities to develop action plans and tools that can be used to build safe, secure environments. Topics include Mobilizing Communities, Engaging Youth and Evaluation. The Guide is available online and can also be ordered for free.

Court Choices for Youth

When young people testify in court, they may feel like they don’t have many choices when, in reality, they do. CourtChoices.ca uses animated videos to teach youth about the choices they have when testifying as well as what happens before, during and after testifying.

Duel with the Devil

Duel with the Devil is a documentary that takes viewers to the streets of Guatemala City, where on a “bad day” 15 people can be murdered. The film details a Canadian-supported project aimed at helping the Guatemalan justice system become more effective. A Study Guide is also available.

It’s Time: African Women Join Hands Against Domestic Violence

This video takes viewers inside women's safe houses, giving an inside glimpse of the lives of African women and girls forced to flee abuse. It's Time: African Women Join Hands Against Domestic Violence details a unique partnership between a Canadian agency and two African organizations that are working to combat an epidemic of domestic violence. A teacher’s guide is included.

Justice In Our Times

JusticeInOurTimes.ca provides justice information, news and resources for British Columbians. The website contains a broad range of information, including current BC justice news, newsletters, legal website links, video presentations on aboriginal justice and human trafficking, as well as a range of upcoming justice events.

Learning About the Law

Learning About the Law uses very simple wording to teach English as a Second Language students about their legal rights and responsibilities in British Columbia. Topics include Renting a Home, Driving, Family Law, and Civil Law. Both the Workbook and a Teacher’s Guide are available online as well as for order.

Legal Journeys

Legal Journeys gives teachers the background information necessary to teach the basics of our legal system and expose students to the concepts and principles that underlie it. Ideal for elementary school students, the lessons can be used to prepare for courtwatching and performing mock trials.
