Finances After Separation

The Finances After Separation (FAS) program provides information and strategies about finances to separated parents. The free three-hour workshop assists parents to understand how to address the financial issues connected with separating and how to develop business-like strategies for dealing with these issues for the long term. Topics include:

  • Becoming financially independent
  • Dealing with your ex and your children about money
  • Dealing with budgeting and debt issues
  • Child support, spousal support and property/asset division issues
  • Useful resources
  • Self-assessment tools

The program is also appropriate for extended family members and members of the community who provide support to separating parents.

Parent's Handbook

The Parent’s Workbook explains how to start and where to turn for help when you are faced with separating your finances. It also provides information on the effect of conflict on children and explains how to communicate about financial issues with the other parent. Additional topics include child and spousal support, property and asset division as well as tools to personalize the information.

FAS Facilitator’s Guide

The Facilitator’s Guide includes activities, agendas and handouts that will help a facilitator use a combination of mini-lectures, group discussion, group activities and audio-visual presentations to deliver the program's content. The facilitator’s role includes helping participants understand the content of the material, leading constructive discussion and answering questions, as appropriate, without providing legal advice.
