Teachers' Law Institutes provide teachers with an exceptional professional development opportunity for learning about the law and BC's legal system. In turn, teachers can take their knowledge back to the classroom and share it with their students.
The Institutes, which are organized throughout BC, feature topics like forensic science, crime scene investigation, coroner’s court and restorative justice. All resources are available to the public, at TeachersLawInstitutes.ca. Topics include:
- Forensics
- Mental Illness, Crime & the Law
- The Role of the Coroner and the Coroner’s Inquest
- Justice Education Society Teacher Resources
Teachers praised the Institutes’ interactive presentations from experts, informal format and networking opportunities.
"Please let everyone involved in the organization and the presentations know what a great job they did," said one teacher. "I found the day enlightening, interesting, and useful. The take home package will be most useful. Thanks again!"
"Just a quick THANK YOU for a truly exciting day! It was one of the best pro-d workshops I've attended!" added another teacher.
Previous Institutes were held in Coquitlam, Victoria, Kelowna, Prince George, Vancouver and Surrey. Funding was provided by The Law Foundation of BC.
Three Institutes are planned for the 2009-10 school year; dates and locations are to be announced.
