On the Road to Justice: an Exchange of Aboriginal and Mayan Justice Traditions

On the Road to Justice documents the journey of a group of Guatemalan Mayans into the Nisga’a, Shuswap, and Tsilhqot’in nations in northern British Columbia. Through dialogues and dances, stories and songs, the group discovers how First Nations communities are reclaiming and restoring their traditional justice practices.

In turn, the group shares with its hosts how Mayan communities are fighting for a justice system of their own in Guatemala. Through this exchange, questions about the role of the state in restorative justice are weighed against those of the need for an autonomous justice system. We meet hereditary chiefs and provincial court judges, and are taken to the ceremonial sites of the Tsilhqot’in people, and to the streets of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside: all on the road to justice.
