Justice Education Society Launches 2 Websites for New Immigrants

The Justice Education Society has launched two new law-related websites for new immigrants to Canada.

CourtInformation.ca is the new online home of the Society’s Court Information Program for Immigrants. The program eliminates language barriers to BC’s courts by providing free information and referrals to new immigrants and refugees appearing in court.

The website provides information on a variety of topics – from Canadian Law to BC Courts and Family Law. It features numerous videos, links to online resources as well as translated information from the popular resource Learning About the Law in six languages: English, Chinese, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Spanish and French.

“CourtInformation.ca uses plain language and a simple design to provide basic legal information in a multitude of languages,” said Rick Craig, the Society’s executive director.

The Society has also launched ImmigrantLegal.ca, which is the website for the Immigrant Public Legal Education and Information (PLEI) Consortium. The consortium is a collaboration of 12 organizations working together to improve the delivery of PLEI to immigrants.

The website features a wealth of information on the two topic areas the project focused on during year one: employment standards and residential tenancy. Resources include fact sheets, frequently asked questions, workshop videos and, coming soon, an online, interactive map of service organizations.

“It is very important that new immigrants to Canada understand their rights and responsibilities whether they are a worker or employer, home owner or home renter,” added Craig. “ImmigrantLegal.ca is new online toolkit of legal-related resources for these two areas of the law.”
